These poems were selected because the poets, Lucille Clifton, Margaret Walker, Langston Hughes, and Maya Angelou speak about the Black experience and the strength, memory, resiliency, pride, and joy that is birthed from being Black.
With each poem, there are 5 questions to encourage the child to do some text-to-self and text-to-world reflections. With all my offerings, this is just a starting place. You can expand this by doing a deeper dive by learning more about each poet and reading their additional work.
